¶ The contribution by Jews to American popular culture is widely acknowledged yet scarcely documented. This is the first comprehensive investigation of the formative Jewish influence upon the rise and development of American popular culture, drawing upon extensive oral histories with several generations of Jewish artists, little-utilized Yiddish scholarship, and the author's own connections with today's comic- strip artists. Philosophiehistoriker, daneben auch Erzieher der in Göttingen studierenden Prinzen Ernst August, August Friedrich u. Adolph Friedrich von Grossbritannien, denen diese "Grundzüge" zugedacht u. gewidmet sind; seit 1804 Professor in Moskau sowie Vorleser u. Bibliothekar d. Grossfürstin Katharina Pawlowna. Zurück in Dtld. wurde er 1815 Professor am Collegium Carolinum in Braunschweig, wo er unverheiratet starb. Sein 8-bänd. "Lehrbuch der Geschichte der Philosophie und einer kritischen Literatur derselben" (1796-1804) gilt als sein Hauptwerk. (Vgl.
